MontagueRhodesJames(1August1862–12June1936),whousedthepublicationnameM.R.James,wasanEnglishmediaevalscholarandprovostofKing'sCollege,Cambridge(1905–1918)andofEtonCollege(1918–1936).HeisbestrememberedforhisghoststorieswhicharewidelyregardedasamongthefinestinEnglishliterature.OneofJames'smostimportantachievementswastoredefinetheghoststoryforthenewcenturybydispensingwithmanyoftheformalGothictrappingsofhispredecessors,andreplacingthemwithmorerealisticcontemporarysettings.Atthesametime,James'protagonistsandplotstend—likehimself—tobeabsorbedwithantiquarianism.Assuch,heisknownastheoriginatorofthe"antiquarianghoststory".
